Edinburgh is Scotland's most dramatic and historic city. It's a combination of beautiful architecture, old and new tourist attractions including the famous Edinburgh Castle which is home to the Military Tattoo and is the host to a year round programme of various events guaranteed to cater to every taste and interest. The Edinburgh Military Tattoo is a fantastic display of music, dance, song and military from the countries of the Commonwealth. This is a once in a lifetime show, which gives a real flavour of Scotland. Highlights include, Highland Dancers, Tartan, bagpipes, the Lone Piper and Fireworks. It is very dramatic in setting and uses Edinburgh Castle as a backdrop. This is an experience which must not be missed. The Tattoo runs for the month of August only.

The jewel in the crown of the Edinburgh events calendar is without doubt the four-week arts and culture extravaganza in August known simply as 'The Festival'. This is something of an umbrella term because in fact, the capital plays host to a number international festivals which overlap and interweave throughout the month including the International Festival, the Festival Fringe, the Book Festival, the Film Festival and the Military Tattoo.

Collectively, these represent one of the greatest celebrations of the arts anywhere in the world, attracting audiences from around the globe to the city's thrilling atmosphere.

See in the New Year / Hogmanay in Edinburgh. During this period the city comes alive with many breathtaking events. Free events to attend:

  • Winter Wonderland - ice rink and funfair
  • German Market - gifts, shortbread and mulled wine
  • Night Afore Street Carnival, Fire Festival and Torchlight procession

And if you are still feeling up to it, New Years Day events include:

  • One Clock Run - Sprint down the Royal Mile between Edinburgh Castle and Holyrood Palace or Triathlon
  • Husky Dog and sledge trials
  • The famous Loony Dook at nearby South Queensferry - brave bathers taking a wee dip in the Firth of Forth
